Labor Day US

Here are 10 things you must know:

1. According to the US Department of Labor, Labor Day was first observed informally by labour activists and particular states in the late 1800s. Although Oregon was the first state to codify Labor Day into law in 1887, New York was the first state to introduce a measure recognising the holiday. To honour its members joining unions and to show support for all unions, New York's labour leaders agreed to have a parade back in 1882.

2. At least 20,000 people attended, and workers had to give up a day’s pay to attend. By the end of 1887, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York had adopted a similar strategy.

3. Two occurrences that occurred in New York City coincided to create Labor Day. First, the Central Labor Union, now defunct, was established as a "umbrella body" for unions from all trades and racial backgrounds.

4. In addition, the city hosted a meeting of the Knights of Labor, the then-largest national labour convention, replete with a sizable parade. However, because the parade was on a Tuesday at the beginning of September, many employees were unable to go.

5. Congress didn't enact a law making the first Monday in September a legal holiday known as Labor Day until June 28, 1894.

6. Unions were battling for "particularly concrete improvements in their working conditions" at the time Labor Day was established. The majority of workers currently enjoy an eight-hour workday, but they had to battle hard for it.

7. Labor Day gave them a chance to get together to talk about their goals and a chance for the nation to recognise the contributions that workers make to society.

8. The "highest unionisation rates were among employees in the protective service occupations (33.3 percent) and education, training, and library occupations (34.6 percent).

9. " The National Education Association, which represents teachers and other educators, is the largest union, with roughly 3 million active and inactive members, according to the National Constitution Center.

10. The unofficial end of the hot dog season occurs on Labor Day.
