Nalanda is the place which 6th Century B.C. I was the center of knowledge all over the world. Here students and teachers from Korea, Japan, China, Tibet and Turkey used to come here to study, but the craze of a madman named Bakhtiyar Khilji ruined it. He set fire to the Nalanda University, which burnt the valuable books kept in its library to ashes. Khilji also got many religious leaders of Nalanda and Buddhist monks killed.
In the 6th century India was known as Sone ki Chidiya. Hearing this, Muslim invaders used to come here. One of these was Ikhtiyaruddin Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khilji, the ruler of Turkey. At that time only Khilji was ruling India. Nalanda University was then a suburb of Rajgir. It is situated on the road connecting Rajgir to Patna. Most of the students studying here were foreigners. At that time 10 thousand students used to study here, who used to have 2 thousand teachers.
Along with Hinayana Buddhism, other religions were also taught in this university of Mahayana Buddhism. The famous Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang also took education here throughout the year. It was the first university in the world to have hostels.
It is said that once Bakhtiyar Khilji fell seriously ill. He got a lot of treatment from his Hakims, but to no avail. Then someone advised him to get treatment from Rahul Shribhadra ji, head of Ayurveda branch of Nalanda University, but Khilji was not ready for treatment from any Hindustani Vaidya (doctor). He had more faith in his officers. His mind was not ready to believe that an Indian doctor could be more capable than his officers.
After consulting many Hakims, finally Khilji called Rahul Sribhadra for treatment. Khilji put a condition in front of him that he would not use any Indian medicine and if he did not get better then he would put him to death. Hearing this, Rahul Shree got into thinking. After thinking about something, he accepted Khilji's conditions. After a few days, he reached Khilji with a Quran and told him that read so many pages of it every day, you will be fine.
Actually, Rahul Sribhadra had applied a medicine paste on some pages of Quran. Khilji spit those pages with spit and thus gradually got cured, but after full recovery he forgot the favors of Hindustani Vaidya. He became jealous that his Hakeem had failed while a Hindustani Vaidya succeeded in curing him. Then Khilji thought that why not eliminate this entire source of knowledge (Nalanda Vishwavidyalaya). History has never forgiven him for what he did after that.

Out of jealousy, Khilji ordered to set fire to Nalanda University. It is said that there were so many books in the university library that it kept burning for three months. Even after this, Khilji's mind did not calm down. He also killed thousands of religious leaders and Buddhist monks of Nalanda. Later ordered to burn the entire Nalanda also. In this way the eccentric repaid the favor of Hindustani Vaidya.
