There have been many such women in our country from time to time, whose work and courage have given a unique example of women power. When we talk of these women, some names come to mind like Panna Dhai, Rani Lakshmibai, Rani Chennamma, Savitribai Phule etc. One of them is also Durgabai Deshmukh who was a social worker. Along with educating women, she has done many such works for their rights and progress of our country which is really commendable. He took inspiration to do social service from his father, after which he started helping others.
At the age of 10, Durgabai started a Hindi school for women in Kakinad. In this, she used to teach Hindi to more than 500 women including her mother so that they could stand on their own feet. Once Mahatma Gandhi along with Kasturba Gandhi inspected this school of Durgabai. Then Durgabai was only 12 years old. Since then Durgabai came in contact with Mahatma Gandhi. He lit Holi of foreign clothes in front of Gandhiji. Donated his precious jewelery to him and dedicated himself as a volunteer. Mahatma Gandhi was also stunned to see the courage of this little girl.
Once in a Congress session, this little girl stopped Jawaharlal Nehru from going to the exhibition without a ticket. Pandit Nehru was very impressed by the conscientiousness and dedication of this girl and went inside with a ticket.
At the age of 20, Durgabai's stormy speeches had created a buzz in the whole country. People were astonished to see his amazing organizing ability and oratory skills. Seeing his courageous, determined personality, people used to call him by the name of 'John of Arc'. In this way she came out of the South and became famous in the whole country. Durgabai also went to jail thrice during the Salt Satyagraha. He had to go through unbearable tortures such as standing in the hot sun, being hungry, grinding chillies, but he did not apologize for being released from prison.
