Matangini Hazra

Matangini Hazra was an Indian woman who did not even know what the freedom movement was for 62 years of her life. She was the daughter of a poor farmer from Bengal. He used to work hard in people's homes and run his house from that. She was single and had a limited life outside her village and home. Gradually, people started to know about the condition of their country and slavery. When she came out of the house, she saw the atrocities of the British rule. Gradually she also started knowing about Gandhiji from the people. One day in 1932, a protest march was going out from outside his hut under the Civil Disobedience Movement. Knowing what 62-year-old Hazra knew, she also joined that journey. When he broke the law by making salt in the anti-salt law, the police arrested him. After coming out of jail, she took a spinning wheel and started wearing Khadi. People started calling her by the name of old Gandhi.

In 1942, Gandhi announced the 'Quit India Movement' and gave the slogan 'Do or Die'. Matangini Hazra had accepted that now the time for independence has come near. She joined it at the age of 72. People started taking out processions in the movement. Most of it was women. The 'old Gandhi' Hazra also joined in. The procession proceeded. When the police gave a warning, people started retreating. At the same time, Matangini came out of the middle and stood in front of the procession. He had the tricolor in his right hand. Waving the tricolour, she went ahead with the proclamation of Vande Mataram when the policeman shot her in the hand. She got injured but did not let the tricolor fall.

The injured groaning Matangini took the tricolor in the other hand and then started moving forward. The police then shot on the other hand as well. He again raised the slogan of Vande Mataram and did not allow the tricolor to fall. They continued towards the police station. Then a police officer fired the third bullet and hit 'Budhi Gandhi' in the head. She fell but did not allow the tricolor to fall on the ground.

People became very angry after his death. Everyone thought when an old lady can show so much courage for the country, then why can't we. What was then, the people captured all the government offices and declared their own government there.
