Pauna Brajbasi was a Major in the army of the Manipur Kingdom. He was an expert in Manipuri martial arts and fencing. He is remembered for the Anglo Manipur war with the British. When the British attacked the state to capture Manipur, he was sent to fight the British. They fought valiantly with very few weapons. When he was unarmed, a British officer had offered to accompany him, but he had offered to behead himself rather than commit treason. They knew that they would not last long in front of the huge British army, yet they fought till their last breath in this war and were martyred. Even though Manipur came under British rule after this, we Indians will never be able to forget the patriotic spirit of Pauna Brajbasi.
