Sidho Murmu and Kanhu Murmu

The crimes and exploitation of the people, farmers and laborers of the area which the British were occupying used to increase. They forcibly imposed taxes on the people. The big problem was that from where the poor farmers and laborers were paying taxes, voices started being raised against this and patriotic people started mobilizing from place to place against the British. One such battle was fought by brothers Sidho Murmu and Kanhu Murmu who took up arms against the moneylender system imposed by the British and gave a befitting reply. Along with laughing he embraced the noose of the gallows for his motherland.

The Santhal Pargana was an area surrounded by hills and forests. People of Paharia and Santhal tribes living in this area and other residents lived by farming. The East India Company prepared an army of zamindars for the purpose of increasing the tax and started collecting taxes forcibly from the residents there. To pay taxes, those people had to take loans from moneylenders and also had to bear the atrocities of moneylenders. This spread the feeling of discontent among the people. Sidho-Kanhu and his two more brothers turned the discontent of the people into a movement.

This movement started from Bhognadih (Jharkhand) where Sidho-Kanhu called a meeting. Thousands of tribal people reached here from hundreds of villages. In this meeting it was announced that they will no longer pay tax. After this the British ordered the arrest of these brothers. The inspector who was sent to arrest these brothers was killed by the Santhals by slitting his neck. During this, fear had arisen among the government officials also regarding this movement. To suppress the movement, the British sent an army to this area and the tribals were arrested fiercely. The British army started firing on the rebels.

Arrows were being fired from one side and bullets from the other. But still, under the leadership of these two brothers, the tribals fought against the British firmly. As long as a single agitator remained alive, he kept on fighting. About 20,000 tribals gave their lives in this war.

The British authorities lured Sidho and Kanhu's close associates with money to arrest these brave brothers and arrested both of them.

On 26th July both the brothers were hanged openly on a tree in Bhognadih village but their faces were not afraid but proud. Both of them sacrificed their lives for their soil laughing.
