Batukeshwar Dutt had a love for his nation and culture since childhood. He was only fourteen years old when he decided to take part in the freedom struggle of India. From the young age of 14, he used to distribute pamphlets as a messenger of the revolutionaries.
An incident happened in the freedom struggle which became an example of the bravery of the revolutionaries. That incident was the throwing of Bhagat Singh's bomb in the National Assembly of Delhi. While throwing the bomb, Bhagat Singh had said: 'If the deaf have to be heard, the voice has to be louder. Batukeshwar Dutt was also accompanied by Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev in this incident. All three were arrested by the police. There were many cases against Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev, so they were sentenced to death.
Here the British government sentenced Batukeshwar Dutt to life imprisonment and sent him to the Andaman and Nicobar jail, which is also known as Kalapani's sentence. During the punishment of Kalapani, Batukeshwar Dutt was subjected to a lot of atrocities by the British, due to which he survived death in jail. He was not sad that all three of his companions were counting their last breaths, but that they were also not hanged.
