In their 2-2 Premier League match on Sunday, Chelsea and Tottenham provided plenty of drama, but their respective managers may have provided the better performance. While the Blues and Spurs both excelled on the field, with Harry Kane tying the score in the last seconds, it was Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte who dominated discussions after the game.
For the majority of the game, the two managers were yelling at each other from the sidelines, making sure to celebrate in front of the other whenever their team scored. Reece James' late goal for Chelsea caused Tuchel to sprint down the sidelines, but Kane's late header gave Conte the victory. After the final whistle, tempers naturally flared when both managers received red cards for an incident that will go down in Premier League annals.
At the conclusion of the game, Conte and Tuchel proceeded to shake hands as is normal, but the interaction swiftly evolved into something else. Both appeared unwilling to release the other's hold as Conte whirled around angrily to face Tuchel. Before referee Anthony Taylor arrived to deliver them both red cards, the two managers got into a brief altercation and had to be removed by the coaching staff and players. While the dismissals meant little on Sunday, they will ensure that neither will miss their upcoming games. On August 20, Tottenham will play host to Wolves, and on August 21, Chelsea will play a game in Leeds.
The first altercation between the two coaches occurred after Tottenham tied the score at 1-1. Conte was celebrating in Tuchel's direction when Tuchel approached the Spurs manager. When Chelsea scored again, Tuchel celebrated by sprinting down the sidelines, giving Conte even more justification to yell at the players when Tottenham tied the score in the waning seconds. After the game, Tuchel made the remark that he wasn't pleased Conte didn't look at him when they shook hands, but he was eager to emphasise that there was no animosity between them. Tuchel said Sky Sports, "I believed when we shake hands you looked in each other's eyes, he had a different opinion. "Football is emotional. It doesn't need to be heated. There are just emotional coaches on the sidelines.
"If we do, then we do. In such case, no. Come on guys, it was a contest between two rivals, and nothing negative occurred."
"There's no bad feelings with Conte," Tuchel continued, "I feel like it was a fair tackle from him and a fair tackle from me."
"I'm astonished that we both received a red card for that. We didn't insult each other, we didn't punch each other, we were battling for our teams, and from my side there's absolutely no hard feelings." When media questioned Conte about Tuchel's remarks regarding the handshake, he attempted to brush off the event.
After the game, Conte told sports Media, "I think it's better to talk about the game." I don't want to comment because, in my opinion, this isn't the most crucial issue, and if there is a conflict, it will only affect me and him, not the other people. Despite those remarks, Conte later uploaded a video of Tuchel celebrating Chelsea's second goal to his Instagram stories with the caption: "Lucky I didn't see you...making you trip over would have been well deserved."
Prior to 2022, these two managers had never faced off, but over the course of the next eight months, they have already done so four times. Before their thrilling 2-2 draw, Tuchel had won their first three meetings, dominating their schedule. Conte's squads have not scored a goal against Tuchel's teams before to that game.
Therefore, the comeback tie by Tottenham meant a lot to Conte, who will be expecting to eventually defeat Tuchel when their teams face off again. The next Premier League match between Tottenham and Chelsea is set for February 25, 2023, but there may be cup matches between the two teams before then.
