Sant Ravidas was a great saint. There is also an interesting story about him. According to this story, once a Pandit ji came to him to buy shoes for bathing in the Ganges. Pandit ji told about the worship of Ganga to Ravidas. He gave the shoes to the Pandit without taking any money and requested that one of his supari should be presented to Ganga Maiya. The loyalty of the saint was so deep that when Pandit ji presented a betel nut to Ganga, Ganga herself accepted it. An inspiring incident from the life of Sant Ravidas is that a sage, pleased with his service, gave him a Paras stone while walking and told him to use it to eradicate his poverty. When he came back a few months later, he was surprised to find Sant Ravidas in the same condition. When the monk asked about the Paras stone, the saint said that it has been kept in the same place where you had gone.
Sant Ravidas was very talented and composed different types of couplets and verses. The specialty of his works was that his writings had a message for the society. He emphasized on increasing social unity by eradicating caste discrimination through his works. By establishing humanistic values, he stressed on the establishment of such a society in which there is no discrimination, greed-greed and poverty.
Sant Ravidas was very popular all over India. He was called Ravidas in Punjab. He was also known as Raidas in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. In Bengal he is known as Ruidas. Along with this, people of Gujarat and Maharashtra also knew him by the name of Rohidas.
