Annie Besant was a renowned Theosophist, social reformer, political leader, women's activist, author and orator. She was of Irish descent and made India her second home. She reached India with the help of a member of the Indian Theosophical Society. The purpose of his coming to India was to make the Indian people socially and politically aware against the oppressive policies of the British government so that people could know their rights and raise their voice against British exploitation.

Annie Besant fought for women's rights, secularism and workers' rights. The Theosophical Society was against discrimination of caste, colour, class and advocated universal brotherhood. His ultimate aim was to serve humanity as much as possible. He started the work of national renaissance in religious, educational, social and political fields. Political independence is necessary for India, to achieve this objective, he organized 'Home Rule Movement' and led it.

He traveled all over India due to which he got information about India and middle class Indians who were suffering greatly from British rule. His long-standing interest in education led to the establishment of the Kendriya Hindu Vidyapeeth in Banaras.

She also joined the Indian independence movement. She was the first woman to become the President of the Indian National Congress. He published a newspaper called "New India" in which he criticized the British rule and due to this rebellion he had to go to jail. How difficult it must have been in those days that a woman from abroad came to India under the oppressive British Raj and raised her voice against the British Raj itself and made the people aware there.
