Hundreds of servants were engaged in his service at all times. She was living a life of elegance and comfort. She was used to a life of luxury. But when she saw the country in trouble, she herself went to the battlefield to increase the enthusiasm of her soldiers. This was the queen of Awadh, Hazrat Mahal.
In 1857, when the British Viceroy Dalhousie usurped the kingdom of Awadh's Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and exiled him from Oudh to Kolkata, his wife Hazrat Mahal waged a war against the British. He led the revolt of 1857 in Lucknow. Such was the spirit of patriotism that by placing his minor son on the throne, he himself fought the British army.
In this war of 1857, Begum Hazrat Mahal organized everyone, showing Hindu-Muslim unity. To encourage her soldiers, the queen did not hold back from going to the battlefield. The rebel soldiers under the leadership of Rani defeated and killed the British so badly that the British were shaken and had to flee from Lucknow.
When the British saw that the queen was proving to be a big problem for them, they adopted the policy of 'divide and rule' and started joining them by instigating the smaller princes against the queen. The traitors betrayed the queen, but the queen had unprecedented organization ability and due to this the zamindars, farmers and soldiers of Awadh continued to advance under her leadership. During the battle of Alambagh, he encouraged his brave soldiers and fought day and night with his soldiers riding on an elephant. But Lucknow was again captured by the British.
Lucknow was spared from the betrayal of traitors but the queen's spirit was not broken and she kept on organizing the fighters and making people aware in the freedom struggle.
