That year was 1930. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay was 27 years old at that time. Kamaladevi got the news that Mahatma Gandhi would start the Salt Satyagraha through Dandi Yatra, after which salt would be made on the seashore across the country. There was talk that women would stay away from this movement. Mahatma Gandhi had fixed the role of women in the movement to operate the spinning wheel and lay siege to liquor shops, but Kamaladevi was struck by this. Mahatma Gandhi was traveling at that time. So Kamaladevi reached the same train in which Gandhi was and met him. His meeting with Mahatma Gandhi in the train was short but enough to make history.
At first Mahatma Gandhi tried to persuade them, but after listening to Kamala Devi's argument, Mahatma Gandhi agreed to equal participation of women and men in the Salt Satyagraha. This decision of Mahatma Gandhi was historic, and even more historic, how a belligerent woman, by keeping her rational thoughts, got women an active place in the movement.
After this decision, Mahatma Gandhi organized the Dandi March for the Salt Satyagraha and formed a team of seven members to lead the Salt Satyagraha in Bombay. This team included Kamaladevi and Avantika Bai Gokhale. Struggling with the police, Kamala Devi and her associates made salt and started selling packets.
One day she entered the Bombay Stock Exchange and auctioned the packets of salt, the people present in the stock exchange got excited and started shouting slogans of Mahatma Gandhi ki Jai. Kamla Devi got another idea after the salt auction in the stock exchange and she reached the High Court. Kamala Devi asked the magistrate present in the high court whether she would like to buy the salt of freedom, that is, the salt of freedom. The story of Kamaladevi's fearlessness spread far and wide from this incident.
