A revolutionary who, seeing the inhuman treatment of himself and his comrades, revolted against his officers and this rebellion became the spark of freedom struggle in the whole country. It was Mangal Pandey who started the first revolution for the independence of the country in 1857.
His rebellion against the British started a revolution in the whole country. Mangal Pandey was a soldier in the British Army. When the new cartridges began to be used in the Company's army, matters worsened as these cartridges had to be opened through the mouth before being inserted into the gun. Such news spread among Indian soldiers that the fat of cow and pig is used in making these cartridges. Because of this, it settled in his mind that the British were intent on corrupting the religion of Indians because it was nefarious for both Hindus and Muslims.
There was already anger among Indian soldiers at the discrimination faced by Indian soldiers in the Company's army, and the news of the new cartridges only added to this discontent. On 9 February 1857, when the 'new cartridge' was distributed to the native infantry, Mangal Pandey refused to take it. This resulted in an order to take away their weapons and take off their uniforms.
Mangal Pandey refused to obey that order and attacked him when the British officer Major Hewson proceeded to snatch his rifle. He killed that British officer Major Human with his rifle. After this, Pandey killed another British officer. Mangal Pandey was captured by the British soldiers. He was tried and sentenced to death by a court martial. Mangal Pandey's rebellion served as a spark.
Just a month after the rebellion by Mangal Pandey, on May 10, 1857, there was a revolt in the military cantonment of Meerut and this rebellion spread like a fire in the whole of northern India. As soon as the news of Mangal Pandey's revolt and his martyrdom spread, rebellion broke out against the British from place to place, which later became the foundation of India's independence.
