Putlimaya Devi Poddar started fighting against the imperialist and social structure in her community at the young age of just 14. At an early age, she joined revolutionary parties to fight the British.
Putlimaya Devi not only did the work of fighting the British rule, but also influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and founded the Harijan Samaj in Kurseong (West Bengal). Through this, he started working for Dalit education and encouraged a very large section of the society to participate in the freedom struggle by making them aware through education. She also started a women's institute whose aim was to inspire women to become freedom fighters and inculcate in them the spirit of patriotism to fight for freedom. Putlimaya Devi's passion for the country was that she worked hard and diligently to mobilize the people against the atrocities of the British in the mountains of the far north-east, where there was a severe shortage of resources.
Due to her revolutionary activities, she was constantly warned by the police and was also called to the police station, but despite these interruptions, she continued with her work. During the Quit India Movement, when the police started arresting big leaders all over India along with Kurseong, they were also arrested a few days later.
