Born in a royal family of Kapurthala and a prolific player of hockey and cricket during school, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur was sent by her parents to Oxford University for higher education. When she returned to India after completing her studies from Britain, she became agitated after seeing the atrocities of the British rule here. His parents did not want him to participate in the freedom struggle, but Princess Amrit Kaur had made up her mind to do something for the country. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place in 1919. After that Princess Amrit Kaur decided that she would come and stay in the freedom struggle.
Big leaders of that time used to come to meet his father Harnam Singh. Gopalkrishna Gokhale was close to his father. It was through him that Rajkumari Amrit Kaur got information about Mahatma Gandhi. He started writing letters to Mahatma Gandhi.
Rajkumari Amrit Kaur joined the national movement. He also went to jail for participating in Dandi March and Quit India Movement. As the secretary of Mahatma Gandhi, he worked for about 17 years. She used to stay in Gandhi Ashram itself. Later he also established such an institute, which is today one of the most important hospitals in the country. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, ie AIIMSI, for this he also arranged funding from countries like New Zealand, Germany, America. He also donated his ancestral house in Shimla to AIIMS. Being born in the royal family, having received higher education abroad and having a life full of comforts and resources, she considered the love of patriotism as paramount and abandoned the life of luxury and adopted a difficult life for the betterment of the country.
