Shachindranath Sanyal was the revolutionary who provided intellectual leadership to the freedom movement. He believed that no movement could be successful without a specific philosophical principle. This was the reason that even great revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh considered Shachindranath Sanyal as their ideal. Shachindranath Sanyal made Varanasi the center of revolutionaries. He called the young revolutionaries from all over the country to Varanasi and formed the Hindustan Republican Association and the Hindustan Republican Army. Later, the revolutionaries of this Hindustan Republican Association did the work of looting the government treasury in the Kakori incident.
German made Mauser was used in Kakori train robbery. The Mauser was a state-of-the-art weapon at that time, which could only be found in Germany. Shachindranath Sanyal made a master plan to bring it to India. For this, Sanyal organized a swimming competition from Chunar to Assi Ghat in Varanasi. BHU student Keshav Chakraborty got the first position in this competition. Keshav was sent by Sanyal for a swimming competition to be held in Germany. Along with this, Keshav was entrusted with the responsibility of bringing a consignment of 50 state-of-the-art mousers to India along with bringing medals for India. Keshav performed this responsibility very well.
With these weapons, the Kakori incident was made successful, but later most of the revolutionaries involved in it were caught. After this, a case of Kakori conspiracy took place in Lucknow and Sanyal was sentenced to life in black water. His younger brother Bhupendra was sentenced to 5 years and Manmathnath was sentenced to 14 years.
