Jayaprakash Narayan was known as Loknayak and JP after independent India. He proved how strong the power of a common man can be in a democracy by openly challenging the arrogance and corruption of power in independent India. But JP's life is not only an inspiration to save democracy, but he also devoted his life to the freedom struggle so that this democracy can be achieved for all Indians.
When JP i.e. Jayaprakash Narayan was 9 years old, he went to the school in Patna. There he studied revolutionary magazines, read articles and poems of revolutionary writers. After completing his schooling, he went to America in 1922 for further studies. He also worked in companies, restaurants, farms etc. in America to meet the expenses of his studies. It was during this time that he became aware of the problems of the working class.
When JP returned from America in 1929, the country was on the verge of independence. Coming to India, he came in contact with Nehru and Gandhi and became a part of the freedom struggle. During the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1932, when Gandhi, Nehru and other important leaders went to jail, JP took over the command of the movement. The British arrested him in 1932 and sent him to Nashik jail. JP led the movement against the British government during the Second World War and carried out such campaigns to stop the tax paid to the British government. During this he was again put in jail. When he was arrested during the Quit India Movement in 1942, he escaped from Hazaribagh Jail by dodging the British and continued the movement.
