Hemu's entire family was imbued with the spirit of patriotism. In his childhood, stories of great revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh were told. He was greatly influenced by this. The feeling of sacrificing the country was inculcated in him since childhood. Hemu came to be recognized as a revolutionary who organized guerrilla activities, burning vehicles and organizing revolutionary processions against the British government.

When Mahatma Gandhi launched the Quit India Movement in 1942, Hemu along with his companions jumped into it with great enthusiasm. Further, when leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Khan Abdul Ghaffar associated with this movement were arrested, the flame of this movement flared up. In October 1942, when Hemu came to know that a British contingent carrying a train loaded with weapons was about to pass through his town, he along with his companions made a plan to derail the train by opening the fish plate of the track. He was doing this work with his comrades when the British noticed him. When Hemu saw the British officers approaching, he asked all his companions to run away but himself stood there. All his companions had fled. He was arrested by the British soldiers. This was the first time that Hemu came into the hands of the British. Already the British government was troubled by his actions. He was prosecuted for this incident. English soldiers tortured Hemu a lot inside the jail. They wanted him to spit out the names of his comrades. But even after suffering many tortures, Hemu did not open his mouth. The British government also gave him many temptations. Despite this, he did not reveal the names of his friends. In the end he was sentenced to death. This young revolutionary was hanged in 1943 at the age of 19.
